Privacy Policy
What Cinemate collects, why, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
Your account
You can create an account with an email address and password, or with Sign in with Apple. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, Apple gives us a relay address rather than your real one, and we never see your real address.
Your preferences
When you first open Cinemate it asks you six questions: your region, the film genres you like, the TV genres you like, the film age ratings you allow, the TV age ratings you allow, and the streaming services you subscribe to. We store your answers so recommendations can be filtered through them.
Your lists
We store the films and shows you favourite, which is what puts them in your watchlist, so they are there when you sign in on another device.
That is all we store about you. Cinemate does not ask for your name, your address, your phone number or your date of birth, and it does not track your location.
Where it is stored
Accounts and the data above are held in Google Firebase, using Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore. Google processes this on our behalf as our data processor.
Advertising
Cinemate is free and is supported by ads, supplied by Google AdMob.
Before any ad is requested we ask for your consent through Google’s User Messaging Platform, and on iOS we also show Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt. No ads load until your choices allow it. You can review or withdraw your ad consent at any time from the privacy options inside the app.
If you buy Remove Ads, no further ads are shown to you.
Buying Remove Ads
Remove Ads is a one off purchase handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Apple does not share your card or payment details with us. We only receive confirmation that the purchase was made, so the app knows to stop showing ads. You can restore the purchase on another device from inside the app.
Crash reporting
We use Sentry to record errors and crashes so we can fix them. These reports describe what the app was doing when it failed. They are not used to build a profile of you or for advertising.
Film and television information
Film and TV information, artwork and streaming availability come from The Movie Database (TMDB). Cinemate asks TMDB for this information; it does not send TMDB anything that identifies you.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app, under Settings. Deleting removes your stored preferences and lists, then removes the account itself. You do not need to email anyone and there is no waiting period. For your security the app may ask you to sign in again first.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask us for a copy of your data, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive it in a portable format. Deleting your account from inside the app does most of this immediately.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Cinemate is rated 4+ on the App Store, which means it contains nothing objectionable, but it is a general audience app and it is not aimed at children. We do not ask your age, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account and given us their details, get in touch through our support page and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it we will update this page and change the date at the top.
